tug boat photoThe Women's Maritime Association is an informational and support network of seafaring women and men. Established in 1980, WMA is based in Seattle, with members from all over the United States, and several other countries. Our membership includes women who work on ferries, tugs, fishing vessels, tankers, deep sea merchant ships, yachts and delivery vessels, as well as women who are seeking employment in the maritime and fishing industries, or who are students in maritime training programs.
WMA's purpose is to promote communication among women and men in maritime industries. Our newsletter provides a forum for exchanging information on employment, health and safety, training, and the achievements of our members. As a network WMA provides mentoring and leadership, historical references, humor and camaraderie.

MEMBER NEWS

In commemoration of Women's History Month 2008, the Stephen B. Luce Library proudly announces the exhibit "Seafaring Women: Courage at Sea." The exhibit celebrates and honors women pioneers as seafarers and mariners. Special highlights include few of SUNY Maritime's women graduates who were trailblazers in the industry and went on to become pioneers.
The exhibit is delivered digitally via the Library's web portal at: www.sunymaritime.edu/stephenblucelibrary/exhibitseafaringwomen.htm and projected on the library's plasma display in the library cafe area.
A selection of books is on display and an extensive bibliography of Library holdings is available both online and at the Information Desk.
The exhibit was researched, compiled, and designed by Library faculty Elizabeth Leschinsky, Alicia Joseph and Shafeek Fazal.
WMA booth at SOCPWMA had a table at the Maritime Education conference held April 1-2, 2008 at MITAGS. The event was well attended and several WMA members reported that they found it very worthwhile. We have a few new members as a result and made some valuable new contacts. A BIG thank you to Julie Keim of Compass Courses & Seafarer's Training Center, Edmonds, WA for funding the travel expenses for two of our members. Look for an article with more details about the conference in the Fall 2008 newsletter.

Send us your news- we'll print it here.
